Elyria Bicentennial 1817-2017
Jeff Sigsworth: "Heman Ely, Sr., 1817 founder & namesake of Elyria, as he looked as a young man -- touring Europe, including the Illyriian provinces (which later gave him the idea for the name "Elyria"). Early histories theorized that he took the name "Ely" and added the last 3 letters of his wife's name "Maria" -- but it's been shown that his 2nd wife's name was Harriet Maria Salter (Maria was her middle name); and they were married 11 years AFTER Elyria was first settled and named."
This bicentennial page would not be possible without the input and sharing of postcards and old photos that come from old Chronicle newspapers, the Elyria Public Library System, The Lorain County Historical Society, other websites and you kind folks of Elyria that shared them. Every effort was made to give you more than just a photo. We included captions on photos when possible to give you more information and some photos are links to article we found on the person, or place. We would like to particularly thank Jeff Sigsworth, Lonnie Cool, Lee Bishop, and Chuck Messer from the Facebook page "You know your from Elyria if..." for their many contributions of photos, postcards and descriptions of the items that sent to us for creating this page. We'd also like to thank Al Leiby for sharing his collection of old Police Department photos along with his in depth descriptions and for EFD Station#1 for allowing us to stop by and take photos of past chiefs also for sharing old photos they had stored and the Elyria Firefighter Local 474 website .
