“Each New Year, we have before us a brand new book containing 365 blank pages. Let us fill them with all the forgotten things from last year—the words we forgot to say, the love we forgot to show, and the charity we forgot to offer.”

Invest Elyria is busy this month preparing for the rest of the calendar year. In the planning stages we are working with several people and organizations to make this year memorable for those in need.
Some of the folks we are working with are:
Beth Doyle and her group "The Elyria Hookers" a knitting and sewing group for the Warming Drive during Compassion Week where last year IE and the Elyria Hookers were able to knit or collect over 1500 items that were put out in Elyria Square for anyone needing the hats, gloves, scarves, and other new and gently used clothing that Elyrians donated.

Invest Elyria holds annual warming event
Laina Yost, The Chronicle-Telegram, Jan 22, 2020 6:00 AM ELYRIA — Groups of Elyrians are providing some warmth to those in need over winter. Invest Elyria and Elyria Hookers took 1,775 knitted or donated items to Ely Square on Monday for anyone who might need them. Socks, hats, scarves, gloves and gently used coats are in little bags at Ely Square that people can come and pick up throughout the week. The event started six years ago, targeted toward anyone in need or anyone who is homeless. Elyria Hookers, a local knitting group, started providing knitted items three years ago. "It's just really grown," said Mary Bryan, executive director of Invest Elyria. "It just keeps taking off and it's really grown. It's really nice because the community gets involved." Two people monitor the items and go over once a day to check on things and rearrange if needed. The event runs through noon Friday. Any items that are left over will be donated to local churches. There were multiple collection sites for donations. Dairy Queen, Pandy's, A&J Raceway and new business GCS Electric, all accepted donations. Bryan said the event is meant to spotlight the need to help others within the community. Contact Laina Yost at (440) 329-7121 or lyost@chroniclet.com |
